On top of the world: AI to figure

A person generated with AI, turned into a 3D model, repaired for printing and finished as a hand-painted figure.

It started as a single AI image: a man in a suit on top of a red roof, raising a trophy. We turned that image into a textured 3D model, repaired the mesh so it would print, split it into parts and printed it. After filling, sanding, priming and painting, the figure stands on the same red roof as in the picture. Drag the model below to rotate it, or scroll and pinch to zoom.

Why the mesh needs repair

AI models look good on screen but are rarely ready to print. They have holes, very thin parts and surfaces that cross each other. We make the mesh solid and watertight and give the thin parts, like the trophy handles, enough thickness to survive printing and painting.

Why it is printed in parts

The figure, the trophy and the roof base print separately. Each part can then be printed in the best position, painted on its own and glued together at the end.

How it was made

  • AI image generator
  • AI image-to-3D
  • Mesh repair software
  • Slicer
  • CR-10 Max
  • Filler & sandpaper
  • Primer & paints
  1. Generate the imageCreate the picture first: the person, the suit with the red tie, the raised trophy and the red roof base with the PRINTYOURFIX plate.
  2. Turn it into 3DConvert the image into a textured 3D model. Check it from every side, because the AI has to guess what the back looks like.
  3. Repair the meshClose the holes, remove surfaces that cross each other and thicken thin areas such as the trophy handles, fingers and shoe edges.
  4. Split and printCut the model into the figure, the trophy and the roof base, place each part on the bed in its best position and print.
  5. Fill and sandFill the seams and layer lines with putty, sand smooth and prime until the surface is even.
  6. Paint and assemblePaint the suit, shirt, tie and roof, then the face, hair and hands by hand. Glue the trophy into the hand and the figure onto the roof.
